President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing his passing as a profound loss to the people of Dagbon and the entire nation.
The President made the remarks at the Presidency when the Dagbon Traditional Council formally announced the passing of the revered traditional ruler.
Expressing his deepest condolences, President Mahama extended sympathies to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning the loss of a distinguished traditional leader.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, President Mahama recalled working closely with Ya-Na Abukari II during efforts to restore lasting peace to Dagbon. He described the late King as a father figure whose wisdom, humility and guidance transcended political and social divides.
He praised Ya-Na Abukari II for his remarkable leadership in transforming Dagbon from a period of conflict into a beacon of reconciliation, unity and stability, noting that his reign would be remembered for fostering peace and strengthening traditional governance.
According to the President, the late Overlord’s commitment to dialogue and consensus-building laid a solid foundation for a peaceful and prosperous future for Dagbon.
Beyond his traditional role, President Mahama described Ya-Na Abukari II as a national statesman and peacemaker whose dedication to Ghana’s unity earned him admiration and respect across the country.
The President assured the Dagbon Traditional Council that the Government would work closely with the traditional authorities to provide the necessary support and accord the late King befitting state honours as preparations begin for his final funeral rites.
President Mahama concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the soul of Ya-Na Abukari II and asked for strength and comfort for the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation during this period of mourning.
