Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast after scoring a dramatic late winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their FIFA World Cup Group E encounter in Philadelphia.

The Manchester United winger, who began the match on the bench, made an immediate impact when called upon and delivered the decisive moment just minutes from full time.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, defender Wilfried Singo surged forward on a powerful run before finding Amad inside the penalty area. The 23-year-old showed remarkable composure, guiding a left-footed effort into the bottom corner in the 90th minute to spark wild celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

The victory not only handed the Elephants a valuable three points but also brought an end to Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run, which had lasted nearly two years.

Ecuador had opportunities to take control of the contest, striking the woodwork three times during the game. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both rattled the crossbar in the opening half, while captain Enner Valencia struck the post after the break as the South Americans searched for a breakthrough.

Despite dominating large portions of the game, Ecuador struggled to convert their chances and only managed their first shot on target in the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced a save from Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

The African side also came close to scoring earlier in the second half when Elye Wahi saw his effort crash against the crossbar.

Ecuador appeared set to continue their strong defensive record under coach Sebastian Beccacece, whose team had registered 12 clean sheets in their previous 19 matches.

However, Amad’s late intervention proved decisive, handing Ivory Coast a memorable victory and strengthening their chances of progressing to the knockout stages from a challenging group that also includes Germany and Curacao.

The result represents an important step forward for the Elephants as they pursue a historic first appearance in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup.
