Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has announced his decision to remain independent from political affiliations, shifting his focus entirely to youth empowerment and humanitarian work. Despite having previously been seen on several occasions campaigning for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and even chairing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) manifesto on sports, Gyan has chosen to step away from the political scene.
Over the past few months, Gyan has expressed frustration about how his involvement in politics has led to negative perceptions and dislike from some quarters. In his words, “I have noticed that many people dislike me for taking a stance in politics.” His decision to declare neutrality comes as a response to the backlash, as he now seeks to prioritize his humanitarian efforts.
In a heartfelt social media post, Gyan stated, “I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political.”
Gyan also expressed his wishes for a peaceful election process, urging political parties and the public to maintain harmony ahead of Ghana’s upcoming elections on December 7. “I wish all the political parties a peaceful election,” he concluded, with a message of unity and goodwill: “God bless our homeland Ghana.”
In addition to his personal statement, Gyan attached a press release from the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, reiterating his commitment to youth development through sports and philanthropy. He emphasized that his mission is centered on the youth of Ghana and Africa, declaring his independence from political influence.
“My vision is to empower the youth of Ghana and Africa through sports and philanthropy,” Gyan noted. “This is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence. This is about our children, our communities, and our continent.” He explained that through partnerships with international organizations, royal families, and other philanthropic groups, he aims to create lasting change that gives young people the opportunity to thrive.
Reflecting on his journey as an athlete, Gyan shared how sports had given him purpose and shaped his life. “Sports saved me and gave me purpose. Its power goes beyond winning or losing—it’s about overcoming setbacks, pushing through challenges, and believing in dreams.”
The Asamoah Gyan Foundation, along with the Moah Green Foundation and the All-Regional Games initiative, will spearhead the construction of sports academies, training centers, and mentorship programs across Ghana. These initiatives will not only focus on athletic talent but also on education, life skills, and character development.
Through this work, Gyan hopes to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on education, health, and equality. His goal is to inspire the next generation to realize their full potential, regardless of their background.
