IGP Deploys Special Team to Investigate Death of UCC Student Avinu Innocentia
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team of experienced investigators and intelligence officers to the Central Region to support ongoing investigations into the death of 20-year-old University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Avinu Innocentia.
The Level 200 Human Resource Management student was officially identified by her family on Friday, June 13, 2026, after her body was discovered washed ashore on a beach in Cape Coast.
According to the Ghana Police Service, authorities had earlier appealed to the public to assist in identifying the deceased after the body was found. A relative later recognized a photograph released by police, leading to the identification process.
The Dean of Students of the University of Cape Coast, police officers, and family members subsequently visited the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Mortuary, where the body was formally confirmed as that of Avinu Innocentia.
Police revealed that an initial examination of the body, conducted in the presence of family members, found no visible signs of physical injury.
As part of ongoing investigations, the Regional Crime Scene Team has examined and processed the area where the body was discovered. The remains have been preserved at the mortuary pending an autopsy, which is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
The deployment of the special investigative team highlights the Police Service’s determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding the young student’s death.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service assured the bereaved family, the University of Cape Coast community, and the general public that every effort is being made to establish the facts and provide answers regarding the tragic incident.
Investigations remain ongoing.
