Residents of Accra are being urged to remain on high alert as the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast additional rainfall across the capital and surrounding communities today, Tuesday, following widespread flooding that disrupted life across the city.

According to GMet, there is a high likelihood of more showers during the day after persistent rains from Sunday night into Monday morning left several roads submerged, displaced residents, and caused severe traffic congestion.

Deputy Director-General (Operations) of GMet, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, said weather conditions remain unstable, with another spell of rain expected to affect parts of the Greater Accra Region.

He encouraged residents to stay informed by following weather updates issued by the agency through its official communication channels.

“We urge the public to regularly monitor our social media platforms for the latest weather information, especially as conditions continue to change,” he said during an interview with Channel One TV.

The latest weather warning comes as many flood-affected communities continue cleanup efforts after Monday’s downpour.

Hard-hit areas included Kaneshie, Adabraka, Circle, Weija, Adentan, East Legon, Achimota, Spintex, and sections around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, where floodwaters engulfed major roads and brought traffic to a standstill.

Several motorists were forced to abandon their journeys after vehicles became trapped in floodwaters, while residents in low-lying communities struggled to protect their homes and businesses from rising water levels.

Although emergency officials are still assessing the full extent of the damage, authorities have advised motorists to avoid waterlogged roads and urged residents living in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures ahead of the expected rainfall.

Accra has experienced recurring flooding during the rainy season, a situation experts continue to attribute to inadequate drainage infrastructure, rapid urban development, and the indiscriminate disposal of waste that blocks waterways.

With more rain expected today, residents are being advised to remain vigilant and heed safety warnings as authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation.
