FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday April 09, 2026

Isaac Kwame Ngula Batun, wishes to commend the Chief Executive Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) for taking a firm position against unapproved and non-standardized steering conversions being carried out by some garages across the country.

The CEO’s decision to defend the planned closure of garages engaged in such unlawful practices is a significant step in the right direction. Road safety must remain a national priority, and any activity that compromises the safety of motorists, passengers, and pedestrians must be addressed decisively.
However, while this move is commendable, Isaac Batun respectfully believes that the matter requires a more comprehensive and strategic approach beyond closure alone.

The NRSA should engage relevant stakeholders such as the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to develop a proper framework for the regulation of garages involved in vehicle modification and related mechanical services.
Such engagement will help ensure that these garages are:
– properly identified,
– thoroughly inspected for health and safety requirements,
– legally licensed as per regulatory requirements,
– and held accountable for the services they provide.
This will not only improve safety standards in the automobile service sector, but it will also ensure that garages operating commercially are brought into the tax net and made to pay the appropriate taxes on the services they render.

Isaac Batun further proposes that all garages that meet the approved standards be officially published by the NRSA and DVLA for the benefit of importers and owners of such vehicles. This will provide the public with a clear guide on which garages are authorized to operate, while helping to eliminate the influence of unapproved and unsafe operators.

This is the path Ghana must take if we are keen about sanitizing the transport sector. Enforcement must not only punish illegality; it must also create a lawful and transparent system that encourages compliance, public confidence, and revenue generation for the state.

The issue before us is not just about shutting down garages. It is about building a regulated, safe, and accountable automotive service industry that serves the national interest.
Isaac Batun therefore urge the NRSA to complement its enforcement measures with stakeholder collaboration, licensing reforms, public education, and institutional coordination to ensure a lasting solution.

…Signed…
Isaac Kwame Ngula Batun
